Frequently Asked Questions - Crystal Deodorant

potassium alum stone

What is Crystal Deodorant?

Natural crystal deodorant is made from naturally occurring potassium alum stone.  Potassium alum is a natural mineral sulfate that is also microbial and prevents odor causing bacteria.  Unlike traditional chemical-rich deodorants and antiperspirants, crystal deodorant stones contain no aluminum hydroxide that have been reported to contribute to cancer, skin reactions, and even increase the risk of Alzheimer's.

Are all crystal deodorants alike?

No. There are two types of crystal deodorant stones available in the market, those made from potassium alum stone, like Verdan crystal deodorant products, and those made from chemically synthesized alum.  Potassium Alum is a naturally occurring mineral found in isolated quarries throughout the world.  Synthetic alum is chemically manufactured in a factory using aluminum hydroxide.

How Does it Work?

The Verdan Crystal Deodorant, made of potassium alum stone, forms an invisible, topical coat when rubbed on the skin, which prevents the formation of odor causing bacteria found in sweat.  So, not only does it prevent odor, it also allows the body to control temperature and release toxins through normal sweating. In addition, alum does not penetrate the body through your pores due to its large size of mineral salt molecular compounds; instead, it simply prevents odors from forming, thus ensuring a safe and natural freshness. How is synthetic alum chemically manufactured?

Synthetic alum is chemically manufactured by mixing aluminum hydroxide with other synthetic sulfate. The resulting mixture/substance obtained from the chemical reaction is then synthesized with ammonium sulfate or potassium. After an initial cooling period, the subsequent product is an alum powder sulfate. Then, this alum powder is compressed to form solid alum which is shaped into crystal deodorant stones. Synthetic deodorant stones appear as an opaque, whitish stone due to the presence of aluminum hydroxide which is also a whitish powder.

How do you tell the difference between natural crystal deodorant stones and synthetic crystal deodorant stones?

Thankfully, you are able to tell the difference between the two beyond potentially misleading “natural” labels.  Synthetic deodorant stones are opaque and whitish, and the natural alum is translucent and contains veins like those found in marble.  For more information read Synthetic Crystal Deodorant Stones vs. Natural Crystal Deodorant Stones.

What is the difference between crystal deodorant and traditional deodorant?

The mineral, potassium alum, which naturally appears as a white, translucent crystal, and is used to produce natural crystal deodorant stones, has deodorizing effects not seen by mainstream deodorants. It prevents odor versus mainstream (non-crystal) deodorants that use heavy fragrances to mask odor, and antiperspirants which prevent the body from sweating by using alcohol or aluminum compounds to shrink the pores of the skin.

How do you to apply the crystal deodorant stone?

Crystal deodorant is most effective when applied to clean skin, ideally directly after showing or bathing when the skin is still wet. Or, if the skin is dry, simply wet the stone and apply as normal.

To apply rub the crystal deodorant stick on your wet skin for 5 to 10 seconds. An invisible, but active deodorizing layer is formed providing a natural feeling of freshness and ensures effective odor prevention.

Are there other uses of potassium alum stone beyond body odor prevention?

The potassium alum stone was traditionally used by Moroccan women to maintain firm breasts and to strengthen abdominal skin. Thanks to its astringent properties, it acts as a skin firming and toning agent. Alum stone can also effectively relieve razor burn or hair removal irritation.
